Governor Rendell Announces Departure of Public Welfare Secretary Harriet Dichter

Governor Edward G. Rendell today announced that Department of Public Welfare Secretary Harriet Dichter will resign Wednesday, Sept. 15, to open the Washington, D.C., office of the First Five Years Fund, which is dedicated to improving federal policy for early education. The governor has named Michael Nardone, deputy secretary for DPW's Office of Medical Assistance Programs, as acting secretary starting Sept. 16. (Sept. 7, 10)

 
Proposed Child Care Regulation Withdrawn

On August 13, 2010, the Department of Public Welfare withdrew the proposed child care regulation concerning professional development and training, which had been published in the Pennsylvania Bulletin on June 26, 2010. (Aug. 23, 10)

 
Budget Approved, Major Cuts to Early Learning Avoided

Yesterday, after negotiations between the Governor and legislative leaders, the Pennsylvania General Assembly agreed to and passed the FY2010-11 budget.  Your voices were strong and your messages and stories have been heard.  “No budget impasse” is good news to child care providers after our experience last year with 100+ days of no budget.
